Thein Win Zaw
Shwe Byain Phyu Group of Companies Chairperson Thein Win Zaw has a longstanding and profitable relationship with the Myanmar military. In exchange for his loyalty to the Myanmar military and silence in the face of their atrocities, Thein Win Zaw has been rewarded with lucrative contracts in logging, jade, mining and petroleum through his conglomerate of around 30 businesses in Myanmar and Singapore.
After the 2021 coup attempt, Thein Win Zaw was given an opportunity to get even richer and provide an invaluable service to the illegitimate junta when his company partnered with a family of Lebanese oligarchs to takeover the telecommunications operator Telenor Myanmar. This was a surveillance windfall for the junta. Now, in addition to committing acts of violence and mass-murder against the people of Myanmar, the junta could freely access, intercept and monitor a massive amount of personal customer call data.
Since then, Telenor was renamed Atom and is owned through the Singapore company, Investcom. Thein Win Zaw and his son, Win Paing Kyaw, are directors, and no actions are currently being taken against them or the company. It’s time for Singapore to show this dirty businessperson the door.
